Rainbow Falls (Hilo)

Rainbow Falls is one of the easiest and most rewarding stops near downtown Hilo. Located just a few minutes from the center of town, it requires almost no planning and very little time, which makes it a perfect add-on before or after exploring Hilo itself.

The main viewpoint is right next to the parking area, offering a dramatic look at the waterfall as it drops into the Wailuku River gorge below. After heavy rain, which is common on the east side, the falls are especially powerful. On sunny mornings, mist rising from the base can create rainbows, which is where the falls get their name.

Overview

What many visitors miss, and what you absolutely should not skip, is the short walk up to the top of the falls. A paved path leads uphill from the parking area to a grove of massive banyan trees and views looking downriver. This upper area feels completely different from the roadside viewpoint. The banyans are enormous, atmospheric, and well worth the extra few minutes of walking. In many ways, this upper section is the highlight of the stop.

Rainbow Falls works best as a brief visit, not a long excursion. Fifteen to thirty minutes is plenty of time to see both the falls and the banyan trees. It’s an ideal example of something Hilo does very well: a dramatic natural feature that’s accessible, beautiful, and woven directly into everyday life rather than isolated as a destination that consumes half your day.

If you’re based on the east side, Rainbow Falls is an easy “yes.” It’s close, visually striking, and pairs perfectly with a morning in Hilo Town.
