Manta Ray Night Snorkel (Kona)

The manta ray night snorkel is one of the Big Island’s most iconic and talked-about experiences. It’s also something you can only do in a handful of places in the world, which is why it’s so often described as a highlight of a Hawaiʻi trip.

Overview

The experience begins with an evening boat ride off the Kona coast, followed by a guided snorkel after dark. Powerful underwater lights are used to attract plankton, which in turn draw in manta rays. The mantas often glide directly beneath the surface, performing slow, looping passes as they feed. Seeing these enormous, graceful animals up close, illuminated in the dark ocean, is undeniably striking and memorable.

When conditions are good, the experience feels almost surreal. Manta rays can span well over ten feet from wingtip to wingtip, and watching them move effortlessly through the water just inches away is something many people never forget. For a large number of visitors, this is the single most magical experience of their entire trip.

Tours are professionally run, safety-focused, and led by experienced guides. You’re typically provided with flotation support and instructed on how to position yourself so the mantas are not disturbed. No diving experience is required, and the activity is accessible to anyone who is comfortable snorkeling.

A Reality Check

While this tour is incredible for many people, it’s important to be honest about one thing: this is not for everyone.

You are snorkeling in the open ocean at night, often in a group, and conditions can be choppy. If you are not very comfortable snorkeling, prone to motion sickness, or susceptible to anxiety in the water, this experience can be challenging. We’ve had multiple people attempt this tour and find it overwhelming, even though they were excited going in.

Many people come away calling it the most extraordinary wildlife encounter of their lives. Others feel they would have been just as happy watching a high-quality video of it afterward.

Both reactions are completely valid.

If you’re confident in the water and excited by the idea of a close, immersive wildlife encounter, the manta ray night snorkel can be unforgettable. If you’re unsure, it’s worth thinking carefully before booking. Knowing yourself is the key to enjoying this one.
